ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
One-Day Workshop
Sunday, February 13, 2022, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm; 2:00 – 5:30 pm ET
This workshop will implement breathing, simple percussion and the voice to explore movement and rhythm in the styles of Native American and West African earth traditions. The class will include demonstrations of Valerie’s mastery of the gyil, a traditional Marimbas from Ghana, Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast as well as percussion instruments that reflect her roots as a member of the Ute Nation of Southern Colorado.
Members of all of these communities believe that everyone can use their inherent gift of rhythm to heal, balance and uplift. Valarie will demonstrate how to play the kind of percussion instruments that keep the groove as it dissipates negative energy and restores harmony.
A particular emphasis of the workshop will be on the way the west African gyil is closely associated with the Kontombe, forces that create beauty and good. The most important function of the gyil and its player is to transport the soul of the deceased from this world to the next. Students will learn about the four energies that are present in the vibration of music in the cosmology of the Dagara Communities; the energies of the musician, the composer, the person who constructed the instrument; and the energy of the materials themselves that permeated the community.

THE INTEGRATIVE SOUND & MUSIC INSTITUTE (SMI) ONLINE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
This program is part of the Integrative Sound & Music Certificate Program — A 9-Month, 130-Hour Online Certification Training focused on the study of the power of sound and music. It can be taken individually or as part of the SMI curriculum. No previous experience is required.

Valerie Naranjo is the professor of West African percussion, song and dance at New York University’s Steinhardt School, and is a member of NYU’s “Global Institute of Advanced Studies” which helps professors to an improved international understanding.
