ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
An Evening Workshop
Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm ET
This webinar provides an introduction to the ways in which the human brain enables musical experiences. Everyday experiences that people have with music, such as music-evoked remembering, feeling in the groove, having music playing in your head and experiencing pleasure are explained in terms of underlying psychological mechanisms and the ways in which these manifest in the brain.
Participants will be encouraged to transcend notions of brain areas devoted to either hearing or playing music, and to instead think and learn about the brain’s functional neuroanatomy. Neuroanatomy integrates the psychological mechanisms of perception, action, attention, memory and emotion that ultimately shape how we experience music at any given moment in time. The format for the webinar is a lecture followed by a question and answer period.
Note: This program will now be offered online. It will be recorded and shared with registrants after each online program for three months (90 days).

Petr Janata PhD, a UC Davis professor, received his B.A. from Reed College and his PhD from the University of Oregon. His research focuses on how brain mechanisms of expectation, imagery, sensorimotor coupling, memory and emotion support strong experiences with music, such as music-evoked remembering and being in the groove.
