Morning session: The Treatment of Depression + Anxiety with Botanical and Nutritional Medicines
It seems almost everyone in our country is either depressed, anxious, or both. We live in a very stressful time and the mainstream solution is to take a pill or talk to a therapist. Both of these approaches can work, but what if you don’t want to take SSRI or anxiolytic medications with all their side effects, or if standard talk therapies haven’t worked for you? This morning world-famous herbalist David Winston will reveal that there are other options, as he shares his deep understanding of these conditions’ complex underlying factors and sophisticated holistic approaches to addressing them.
Impaired mental health is more than an imbalance of neurochemicals. There can be more than 14 underlying causes of depression, including: inflammation, blood sugar dysregulation, and hormonally induced depressions; and 11 causes of anxiety, including thyroid, GI tract and old-age induced types of anxieties. A skilled herbalist can pinpoint the specific underlying cause of the imbalance, and mild to moderate cases can often be very effectively helped using the appropriate herbs, but it is a common misconception to think that there is such a thing as a specific “depression herb.” One has to correctly diagnose the specific causes of any emotional dysfunction to identify the specific remedies to treat it.
Afternoon session: Herbal Synergy, A Key to Effective Herbal Medicine
In just about all the world’s great herbal traditions (Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Unani-Tibb, Tibetan medicine, Siddha, Jamu, Physiomedicalism, the Eclectic Movement, William LeSassier’s Triune System, etc.) the concept of herbal synergy is woven into the fabric of healing practice. In fact, throughout the history of herbal medicine, the use of simples (one herb at a time) is the rare exception rather than the rule. The use of complex herbal formulas is almost universal, as practitioners have always understood they are most often treating complex people with complex problems, and modern scientific research is now confirming that when herbs are skillfully combined in formulas they can have far greater activity than the individual ingredients.
This afternoon David Winston, one of the world’s most experienced and knowledgeable herbalists, will share his insights into how to get beyond the misinformed idea that single “magic bullet” remedies can cure specific conditions and instead present a holistic understanding that permits a practitioner to find the optimal custom formula that fits a specific patient at a specific time.
