This unique series of evening presentations addresses the history of psychedelics from classical antiquity and among Amazonian shamans through current research investigating the therapeutic value of psilocybin, MDMA and other compounds for clinical applications including PTSD, addiction, existential distress in palliative care and clinical depression. Implications for the utilization of these novel therapies for the future of healthcare will be addressed.
We are living in the midst of a renaissance of research into psychedelic (or entheogenic) substances. Decades of promising research into their extraordinary benefits for numerous medical conditions were brought to a stop in the 1970s, amid the cultural turbulence of the era. In recent years, we have witnessed a reemergence of scientific and clinical research with promising findings at premier institutions including Johns Hopkins, NYU and UCLA.
At a time when we may be seeing the limitations of modern psychiatry’s medicine cabinet, these novel compounds and ancient medicines are in the process of returning to a status of respect and recognition within medical research. Many of those who take them under carefully controlled clinical research conditions report having extremely meaningful and therapeutic experiences, leading to promising implications for various forms of clinical suffering.
Join us as we provide a broad context and invigorating conversation for understanding these extraordinary substances, from their possible role in the mystery centers of Ancient Greece, their integral place among the indigenous cultures of the Western Hemisphere, and to their current place in modern medical research.
