ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
An Evening Concert and Dialogue
Friday, February 19, 2021, 7:30 – 9:00 pm EST
Internationally recognized for true mastery of the bala (xylophone of West Africa), Famoro Dioubate is regarded as the keeper of the torch of West African Music. He is from a family of griots, which are families of musicians, storytellers and historians who maintain the music and recite the history and lineage of the people of West Africa, and are widely respected for skillful artistry.
This evening, Famoro will play the bala (xylophone) so we can hear the soul of West African music. The bala represents the source of West Africa’s folklore, stories, songs, dances, history, melodies and rhythms that are the heart of West Africa. The bala instrument is essential to “Djeliya”, which is the vast ancient musical culture and artistic expression of the griot families, who are the inheritors and custodians of the ancient art, medicine and magic of Djeliya.
Note: Kevin Nathaniel will serve as MC and will hold a dialogue with Famoro to give us a deeper understanding of the “world’s greatest bala player,” this will include a short Q&A.

Famoro Dioubate was born in Guinea, West Africa, and is the heir of Africa’s legendary bala master, the late El Hadj Djeli Sory Kouyate.
Kevin Nathaniel, a Yale University graduate, as a Scholar in Fine Arts, is an artist, performer and multi-percussionist, who specializes in the ancient African mbira.
