Just as we reflect and learn from our history, it is important to also support those who are paving the future. One way to do that is by looking within our local communities to support its woman-owned businesses.
Here are some of our favorites local businesses within our hometown of New York City:
Nguyen Coffee Supply is the first ever Vietnamese-American-owned importer and roaster of green coffee beans from Vietnam in New York. Founded by Sahra Nguyen, a first generation Vietnamese American, whose multifaceted creative career includes award-winning documentary filmmaker behind NBC News’ “Deported,” co-founder of New York Times reviewed restaurant “Lucy’s Vietnamese Kitchen,” co-founder of podcasting agency “Listening Party” and a 2018 Google Next Gen Tech Policy Leader.
Cafe con Libros (coffee with books) is a feminist bookstore and coffee shop with a focus on community. Owned and operated by Kalima Desuz, a social worker and community organizer, Cafe con Libros “seeks to advance and uplift stories of womxn and girls around the globe who are redefining the word feminist and feminism with every day, ordinary culturally informed acts of resistance and love.”
WP Theater (Women’s Project Theater) is the nation’s oldest and largest theater company dedicated to developing, producing and promoting the work of women+ at every stage of their careers. For over 40 years, WP has been empowering women+ artists of all kinds to reach their full potential, challenging preconceptions about the kinds of plays women write and the stories they tell.
