Rick Doblin
Rick Doblin, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. His undergraduate thesis at New College of Florida evaluated the potential of psychedelic drugs to catalyze religious experiences. He also conducted a thirty-four-year follow-up study to Timothy Leary’s Concord Prison Experiment. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. He founded MAPS in 1986, and currently resides in Boston with his wife.

Penny Price Lavin, the Associate Director of One Light Healing Touch (OLHT), is a practitioner and instructor of OLHT who has been working with energy healing since 1985. She is also an award-winning filmmaker whose work includes the documentary, The Healing Field: Exploring Energy & Consciousness, which features Ron Lavin, Bruce Lipton and other leading figures in the field of energy medicine. Psilocybin mushrooms have been used for hundreds, likely thousands of years. With at least 116 psilocybin active species known to date, their widespread occurrence and long history of use by numerous cultures has set the stage for modern medicine to measure their folklorically reported, therapeutic benefits.
Currently, more than 40 universities in North America and Europe have been approved for clinical studies ranging from treating depression to Alzheimer’s to addiction. Psilocybin has risen to the forefront of medical research.
This talk will cover the psilocybin movement through history into the modern epoch. It offers an overview of the most clinically significant studies, the newest research on psilocybin analogs, micro-dosing and the implications for creating a paradigm shift in the ecology of consciousness.
Will psilocybin help us be healthier, happier and better Earth citizens? Could psilocybin be the tipping point in the next quantum leap in the evolution of humans? Let’s look at the evidence together for an informed discussion.

When Richard Schultes entered the northwest Amazon in late 1941, he was already a sophisticated and experienced ethnobotanist. After studying the therapeutic uses of peyote among the Kiowas in Oklahoma, he had traveled south to Oaxaca where he carried out groundbreaking research on magic mushrooms among the Mazatec peoples of southern Mexico. His original research objective in Colombia was to document the plants employed as arrow poisons which were then becoming important as muscle relaxants in abdominal surgery.
However, he also hoped to solve the mysteries of ayahuasca which had been first stumbled across by his boyhood idol Richard Spruce almost a century before. Schultes’ vast experiences with his indigenous colleagues in both temperate and tropical America taught him that there is an inextricable link between biological and cultural diversity. Inspired by this vision, the Amazon Conservation Team has helped create a new conservation methodology: biocultural conservation. This talk focuses on the development and implementation of this approach.

For almost two decades, MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) has been conducting FDA-regulated drug development research into MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD in the United States, Switzerland, Israel and Canada. We have completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies and the first of two Phase 3 studies, with very promising results.
We’re also starting research in five countries in Europe and England for approval by the European Medicines Agency in England, Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, the Czech Republic and Norway. The FDA has awarded Breakthrough Therapy designation to MDMA-assisted Therapy for PTSD.
This evening will address the history of MDMA, our safety and efficacy data, information about mechanisms of action and our therapeutic approach and possible post-approval regulations. We currently anticipate FDA approval around the end of 2022 or early 2023. Approval in Europe would be a year or so later, depending on the availability of funding.
